World famous at Hamilton East School Giant Pumpkin competition

Yes folks, the time has finally come to reveal which class grew the heaviest pumpkin in our school giant pumpkin competition!

Last week we harvested the pumpkins and displayed them in the window of the resource room.

Then we started a competition to see who can guess the weight of the pumpkins.

Hmmm......... verrrrry tricky! How much does a pumpkin weigh?

The pumpkins varied greatly in size and weights.

Room 13 children carried the lighter ones to the resource room.

But we had to get Dugan to bring the heaviest ones in the wheelbarrow. The smallest ones were still pretty heavy!

Then on Friday at Positive Assembly we had the weigh-in.

Friday was also Race Relations Day and Room 13s entry into a poster competition called I am Aotearoa is displayed on the wall above the pumpkins.

 The three heaviest pumpkins were grown by Room 4, Room 9 and Room 13. 

Here's Ms Jones and Dugan weighing Room 4s pumpkin. It weighed 29 kilos!

Room 9 and Room 13s pumpkins were too close to call. About half the school thought Room 9s was the heaviest. 

Here is Room 13s pumpkin on the scales. It weighed 37.25 kilos.
Room 9s was 36.75.
 

 Oh, so close!!!! 

Room 13 won the giant pumpkin competition 2014 by half a kilo!

The winners of the competition will be announced at Positive Assembly this Friday. 

Drawing still life

We spent Friday afternoon drawing fruit platters made up of apples, cape gooseberries and grapes from Ms Jones's garden. We will complete them next week, though we won't have the fruit anymore to look, draw, look at. MMMMMMMMmmmmmmm, it was delicious!

Self portraits

Here are some of our self portraits. We have practiced drawing our eyes noses and mouths in proportion and focused on just drawing our heads and shoulders. We are going to enter our portraits into a competition to design a poster for Race Relations Day.


 

 

 

 

Pumpkins and sunflowers

We have been watching the pumpkins growing. It is hard to know which one will win the pumpkin competition. Here's ours:

Our pumpkin is probably as big as it is going to get. It is pretty enormous!

Room 5 seem to have twins!

Here is another glorious view of Room 13s pumpkin.

This is Room 4s. It has slowed down a bit and we think ours has overtaken it in size.

This one is behind the hall. We are not sure which class it belongs to. Can any blog readers recognise it as theirs?

The butterfly garden has some huge sunflowers growing in it. We are  learning to take photos of them. Here are some taken by Room 13 children:

Back in business in 2014

Welcome back to school everybody! 

We're off to a  busy start after a lovely long summer holiday. Ms Jones was very happy to see everyone again.

Most of the children in Room 13 this year were in Room 13 last year.

Last year we were a Year One class. We were in Kowhai Team. Now we are Year Two and we are in Totara team.  Being in Totara Team means we are allowed to play down on Putikitiki at lunch time.

We are very excited to have two Masters students from the university working with us this year. They will  spend four days every other week in our class, helping us to learn and learning to be teachers at the same time. They are called Ms Scot and Mrs Mackie.

We wrote letters to Ms Bobsien to ask if the Totara team sandpit could get more sand and a shade cloth cover to keep the sun off on hot days.

Amazing! The same day we wrote to Ms Bobsien asking for more sand for the Totara sandpit a whole load arrived!
As you can see, we have a great view of the sandpit from our deck.

There are some changes in Room 13 this year. Two bean bags, for example.

Wow! The pumpkins have taken over the kitchen gardens

 The mobile dental clinic is at school. Room 13 went for a tour. We were the first class to have our teeth checked.
